Sure, it's bad in the short-run, but think about it in the long run. If oil prices rise higher then that will drive entrepreneurs to develop alternative fuels. Since we know the government is not going to help with this goal, private enterprise will be the only way to truly develop those fuels. In the past there hadn't been a profit incentive for them to do so, but now there is (or will be) since individuals and firms would purchase their goods in order to avoid gas prices.
Such alternative fuels would, as is obvious, make our environment cleaner and reduced our dependence on foreign powers. It would not be limited to cars, but would spread throughout the economy to trucks, trains, planes, ships, etc.Has anyone else thought that rising oil prices might not be a bad thing?
I am in line with nervous` answer. Yes and no. No, it is a bad thing because since oil is used by so many things in the economy, high prices in fact become a tax on economic activity. The poor in society also pay a disporportionate higher price for inflation caused by high oil prices because they are in the weakest position to protect themselves from inflation through salary increases or changes in buying habits (difficult to be flexible when there is no room to spare).
But on the other hand, yes, higher oil prices definitely represent a market signal to produce or use alternate sources with comparable benefits. Besides the dull mantra of car-pooling, use public transit, and make homes use less heating, governments have a non-financial role in tems of making the economy less energy dependent. Part of the solution revolves around why we use so make energy to travel. It is because our workplace is at one place, shops are elsewhere, and so on and soforth. Local governments must look to clustering things more conveniently, or at least make them convenient by lining them along a corridor that makes public transit a competitive option in terms of convenience. This means having having high-density residential areas, mixed high-density upperfloor residential-groundfloor commercial on main streets, and high-density commercial in others, all in intersecting straight corridors.Has anyone else thought that rising oil prices might not be a bad thing?
it would be great if it wasn't keeping the fascists in power. and if it wasn't happening because of violence. and most of the technology which will lead to alternative fuel is already owned by oil companies, who won't be giving it up anytime soon.
I wonder if it's unconstitutional. The Constitution says congress shall have the power: To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries;
Does keeping these rights without using the technology violate the Constitution, because the clause specifically states this is done to promote progress?
I hope they do create alternative fuels. It's probably a good thing in the long run that oil prices are ridiculously high.
lol, I say yes and no at the same time. Bad because like 98% percent of the world uses oil to fuel there cars, but good because it helps motivate people to create new kinds of oil or fuel.
For a short moment I thought it might be good because it would push us for a better fuel source. Then by doing some research we have always had the ability to produce a safer, enviromental friendly and cost effective fuel source even before oil was needed to fuel automobiles.
So, now I know all they are doing is filling their pockets with our money.

yes. i've long said that the rising oil prices are FANTASTIC. europe's been paying higher than America for oil for DECADES... its time we got kicked back into reality. and Americans will only take notice when the price of oil starts hurting their wallets... so this will hopefully cause car companies to icrease mileage and for people to buy more environmentally-friendly cars. hooray for rising oil prices!
